Join University of Maryland Extension, NRCS, and Keith Ohlinger for an educational pasture walk at Porch View Farm in Woodbine, MD (Howard county).

Porch View Farm is a family farm dedicated to raising heritage breed livestock on a silvopasture system. The farm currently raises Irish Dexter cattle and honey bees but has previously had pigs, goats, sheep, rabbits, chickens, ducks, geese, turkeys, and guineas. Our host, farm owner Keith Ohlinger, will share his experience implementing practices like silvopasture, rotational grazing with mixed species, and using amendments like biochar and compost to build soil health on the farm.

Directed by Ian Cheney for the Wonder Collaborative

Film Background: At the height of the pandemic, many scientists were concerned about how their work had become so divisive and how public trust in science had eroded. At the same time, many admitted that the very things that first drew them to science—the joy of discovery, the awe of understanding the world, the endless curiosity—had been overshadowed by the pressures of grants and career demands. With that in mind, the producers wanted to make a film that speaks to this moment and honors science in a way that reconnects it to the broader human experience?

They set out to celebrate an activity essential to both research and humanity itself: observation. The goal was not to lecture but to invite dialogue, to honor scientific inquiry without demanding that there is only one path to knowledge. In short, this is an experiment, in science filmmaking at some level, but more generally in creating community around the instincts that guide us all. And that’s why Observer does not end with the final credits. Part of the experiment is finding new ways to take it out into the world to learn from all of those willing to share their powers of observation.

The film screening will be followed by a brief, guided group activity in which viewers become the Observers.

Queen Anne’s County Master Gardeners are busy getting ready for their 10th Annual Plant Sale slated for Saturday, April 26, 2025, at the University of Maryland Extension-Queen Anne’s County Office (505 Railroad Ave, Centreville, MD 21617) from 8:30-11:30, rain or shine.

In addition to mingling with a group of passionate and knowledgeable gardeners, you can buy plants, introduce the kids to pollinator-friendly gardening, or ask questions about your landscape. You are welcome to request advice about flowers, fruits, vegetable beds, and plants to beautify your yard and provide a friendly habitat for wildlife like songbirds, butterflies, bees, and hummingbirds at our ‘Ask A Master Gardener Plant Clinic.’ Master Gardeners are volunteers trained by the University of Maryland Extension and will help you select the perfect plant for your garden. Maybe you’ve been longing to have some herbs by the kitchen door, find the most unique delicious variety of heirloom tomatoes, or try a new kind of pepper but don’t know how or where to find the plant (like the fish pepper or Chimayo del Norte pepper). Master Gardeners will be there to assist you on your gardening journey. Bring your own wagon to carry your purchases! The proceeds from this event will help support the many community projects and educational programs maintained by the Master Gardeners in Queen Anne’s County.
