The Maryland 4-H State Horse Judging Contest tests the 4-Her's knowledge of horse conformation and way of going. The contest has a mixture of halter and under-saddle (or in-harness) classes with 4 horses to judge in each class. After placing the classes and enjoying a short lunch, contestants must defend their placings for classes by giving "oral reasons" to the judges. Awards are granted in the senior, intermediate, and junior divisions to the top County 10 teams, top 10 overall individuals, and top 10 individuals in reasons. In addition, the top 10 senior individuals compete for one of the four spots on the Maryland State Horse Judging Team that competes at the Eastern National 4-H Horse Roundup.

LARC Lecture Series: Should Ecological Planting Be a Design Profession Separate from Landscape Architecture?

  • Wednesday, April 23 - Wednesday, April 23

This presentation explores whether landscape architecture’s ongoing neglect of ecological planting design—despite its growing importance in addressing urban environmental challenges—warrants the creation of a distinct professional discipline. As cities grapple with climate change, biodiversity loss, and stormwater management, the need for resilient, ecologically sound planting strategies has never been greater. However, traditional landscape architecture often prioritizes aesthetics and spatial planning over ecological function. Should ecological planting design be elevated into a specialized field with its own standards, training, and professional identity? This inquiry aims to assess the viability and necessity of such a shift within the profession.

LARC Lecture Series: Alternate Project Delivery Methods: Multiple Pathways in Professional Practice

  • Wednesday, April 02 - Wednesday, April 02

This presentation explores alternate project delivery methods utilizing the award winning work of Floura Teeter. Examples of Design-Build (DB), Design-Bid-Build (DBB), Progressive Design-Build (PDB) and Public-Private Partnership (P3) are showcased. One example is the transportation sector with her work on large-scale infrastructure, heavy construction, and transportation projects, which are historically engineer-driven and resistant to design thinking. Joan’s work encompasses millions of square feet of outdoor recreation areas, roadway improvements, and transit system hubs, including work on suburban Maryland’s $1+ billion Intercounty Connector, the senior housing project Brightview Grosvenor, and Purple Line projects. Floura Teeter, celebrating 25 years, is one of the largest single-discipline landscape architecture firms based in Baltimore, Maryland with offices in Philadelphia and Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

Queen Anne’s County Master Gardeners are busy getting ready for their 10th Annual Plant Sale slated for Saturday, April 26, 2025, at the University of Maryland Extension-Queen Anne’s County Office (505 Railroad Ave, Centreville, MD 21617) from 8:30-11:30, rain or shine.

In addition to mingling with a group of passionate and knowledgeable gardeners, you can buy plants, introduce the kids to pollinator-friendly gardening, or ask questions about your landscape. You are welcome to request advice about flowers, fruits, vegetable beds, and plants to beautify your yard and provide a friendly habitat for wildlife like songbirds, butterflies, bees, and hummingbirds at our ‘Ask A Master Gardener Plant Clinic.’ Master Gardeners are volunteers trained by the University of Maryland Extension and will help you select the perfect plant for your garden. Maybe you’ve been longing to have some herbs by the kitchen door, find the most unique delicious variety of heirloom tomatoes, or try a new kind of pepper but don’t know how or where to find the plant (like the fish pepper or Chimayo del Norte pepper). Master Gardeners will be there to assist you on your gardening journey. Bring your own wagon to carry your purchases! The proceeds from this event will help support the many community projects and educational programs maintained by the Master Gardeners in Queen Anne’s County.
