Salisbury Facility

Salisbury

Mr. David Armentrout manages the Lower Eastern Shore Research and Education Center's Salisbury and Poplar Hill Facilities. Twilight meetings are held at the farms so farmers, homeowners, and hobbyists can see scientific biological controls, cultural practices to reduce weed, disease, and insect problems.

Tests of herbicides, fungicides, and insecticides are also underway to insure the products are effective and safe to the plant. From the information determined during research trials, growers then can decide which varieties and treatments are the safest and produce the best results. Consumers leave with a better understanding of the safety emphasis the American farmer puts on his crop everyday. They also learn that many of their everyday household use items are created through agricultural products.

An Interregional Research Project No. 4 (IR-4) center was established at the Salisbury Facility in the year 2000. IR-4 Specialty Crops Program is a national agricultural program to clear pest control agents for minor uses. Trials are conducted under stringent guidelines, where alternative pest control products are applied. Crop samples are then sent to laboratories where tests are performed to determine levels of residue. The goal is to hasten the availability of products offering clear advantages over current products for consumer, applicator, and environmental safety.
