For the second time this spring, students and faculty welcome the arrival of a thoroughbred foal born on the university’s Campus Farm! A little filly, by Cherokee’s Boy out of Amazin, is pictured right standing with her mother just hours after her birth at approximtely 5:20 a.m. on Tax Day, April 15.

Animal science students and faculty stayed up all night in the horse barn for round two of “foal watch” to be able to witness and aid in the birth as well as watch the newborn take its very first steps.

The filly already has a playmate to frolic with: a chestnut brown colt (pictured left) born on the Campus Farm March 8 who has been anxiously awaiting her arrival. The two foals are the first to be born on the Campus Farm in nearly 30 years and they have created quite a buzz across the entire UMD community.

The entire UMD community got involved with suggesting names for the young thoroughbreds' future careers as racing stars. Finalists will be announced at Maryland Day, April 27, where attendees will have a chance to vote for the winning name and see the two foals in action.
