Happy World Soil Day!

December 5, 2013

Did you know December 5 is World Soil Day? It’s a day to celebrate the “importance of soil as a critical component of the natural system and as a vital contributor to the human commonwealth through its contribution to food, water and energy security and as a mitigator of biodiversity loss and climate change,” according to the International Union of Soil Sciences.

The Department of Environmental Science and Technology (ENST) in the University of Maryland’s College of Agriculture and Natural Resources offers a major in soil and watershed sciences. Click here for more information.

"Soil is an interesting, intricate, amazingly functioning, surficial covering of the earth, says ENST Soil Sciences professor Dr. Martin Rabenhorst. “It has beauty, character, lineage, and function. We depend on it completely for food, water, and shelter. We literally couldn’t live without it.”
