Peter H. Dernoeden is a Professor of Plant Science & Landscape Architecture and joined the University of Maryland in 1980. He received his B.S. (1970) and M.S. (1976) degrees from Colorado State University, and he earned his Ph.D. in 1980 at the University of Rhode Island. Dr. Dernoeden served in the U.S. Army between 1970 and 1973.His appointment includes research and extension components and he teaches a course in pest management strategies for turfgrasses. Dr. Dernoeden coordinated the Maryland Turfgrass Disease Diagnostic Laboratory for 28 years and continues to be responsible for making disease and weed management recommendations. He also has coordinated the biennial Maryland Turfgrass Research Field Day since 1982. Dr. Dernoeden has an extensive disease management field research program, which has focused on the impact of mowing, irrigation and fertility on disease severity. He and his graduate students have published numerous manuscripts on turfgrass disease etiology and epidemiology; weed biology; and have conducted hundreds of chemical weed and disease control evaluations.
