Senior Faculty Specialist Paul Goeringer, AGNR

Paul Goeringer, senior faculty specialist with the Department of Agricultural and Resource Economics (AREC) and an Extension legal specialist at the University of Maryland (UMD), was recently named a director of the American Agricultural Law Association (AALA).
“AALA is really the only professional association for attorneys practicing in the field of agricultural law and provides the opportunity to network and provide continuing legal education. We include private practice attorneys, government attorneys, in-house counsels for agricultural companies, and they even kindly let us academics in,” says Goeringer. “For me, being a member really makes me perform my job more effectively. I often get presented with issues from the ag community in Maryland that I might not always understand, but I probably know someone in AALA who is always willing to answer a call, email, or social media message asking for some help in better understanding an issue. On top of that, I have developed a number of friendships due to the association.”
Goeringer grew up on his family’s wheat and cattle farm in western Oklahoma. He attended Oklahoma State University and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in agricultural economics, then graduating with a Juris Doctorate from the University of Oklahoma. After law school, he received Master’s degrees in agricultural law and agricultural economics from the University of Arkansas. He is licensed to practice in Oklahoma.
Since joining the faculty at UMD, he has written more than 200 Extension publications, is a regular speaker at Extension meetings around Maryland and the mid-Atlantic region about agricultural law, and is a regular contributor to a number of regional and national popular press publications.
Goeringer has been a member of AALA since 2008 and co-chaired the membership committee from 2017 to 2018. He has co-chaired the Ag Law Update committee since 2019, and has also served on the Symposium Planning Committee since 2012. He is thrilled to be a new director with the AALA.
“Professionally, it allows me an opportunity to give back to the professional association that has meant a lot to me over my career,” says Goeringer. “Personally, I get to work with many of my friends on the board and make new ones along the way.”
