Youth and adults associated with Maryland 4-H have had plenty of reasons to celebrate over the past year, including a 300-pound crab cake!

At the 4-H Awards Gala held January 20 at the Laurel Park Racetrack, a crowd of roughly 500 gathered to recognize the accomplishments of 4-H youth, volunteers, military, scholarship winners and foundation donors in 2012.

During the event, Salisbury-based Handy International presented the Maryland 4-H Foundation with a check for $3,127, which the company raised by creating the “World’s Largest Crab Cake” at the Maryland State Fair in September. The colossal cake surpassed the previous record held by Handy and weighed in at more than 300 pounds. Handy sold sandwiches from the crab cake during the state fair and donated the proceeds to the 4-H Foundation.

The Maryland 4-H Foundation awarded more than $30,000 in scholarships to youth from around the state at this year’s gala. Dozens of 4H youth had opportunities to participate in various events, competitions and trips throughout the country during 2012.

“We are very pleased to be able to recognize the accomplishments of so many 4-H members and the significant contributions of an outstanding group of 4-H volunteers and partners,” said Jeff Howard, Assistant Director for 4-H Youth Development. “The College of Agriculture and Natural Resources, University of Maryland Extension, and Maryland 4-H are very proud of the diverse ways youth and adults in the 4-H program learn, grow, and serve.”
