The College of Agriculture and Natural Resources (AGNR) is excited about the latest crop of students admitted to the University of Maryland for the 2013 fall semester – especially those interested in joining the AGNR family!
Students accepted to UMD for the fall who listed potential majors within AGNR are a talented bunch with an average GPA of 4.18 (weighted) and an average SAT score of 1290. They hail from almost every county in Maryland, 17 different states spanning Washington to Maine and points in between, as well as Puerto Rico and China.
“The College of Agriculture and Natural Resources continues to attract students of the highest caliber with our diverse departments and programs. Those students admitted for the fall semester are no exception,” said AGNR Dean Cheng-i Wei (pictured right). “We look forward to getting to know these bright young minds better once they arrive on campus and witnessing what they will accomplish in the classroom, the lab and beyond.”
Students have until May 1 to decide whether to commit to the University of Maryland for the fall but some – like Lilit Hakobayan of Montgomery County, MD – made up their minds the minute they received their acceptance packets in the mail. “I definitely will be attending Maryland,” says Lilit, who was also accepted into the Scholars Program at the University of Maryland. “It was my first choice university from the very beginning.”
Lilit (pictured left) lived in Armenia until the age of eight, speaks four languages and plans to pursue her undergraduate degree in nutrition and food science before ultimately applying to medical school. She says it’s not a major she originally considered as an option for pre-med until meeting with representatives from the College of AGNR at the University of Maryland. “It felt like I was home. Everyone was so friendly and treated me like a member of their own family,” she says. “Many medical problems today relate to nutrition and obesity and I think this (Nutrition and Food Science) program will help me become a better doctor in the future.”
Nearly half of admitted students showing an interest in AGNR programs selected a pre-professional track, meaning they are looking toward graduate studies in the medical, dental, veterinary, law and physical therapy fields.
The time period between now and the start of the fall semester will be a busy one for soon-to-be freshmen. April Brohawn (right), the College of AGNR’s admissions coordinator, is standing by to help out in any way she can. “Don’t forget about Spring Open Houses on campus for admitted students,” April says. “Also, students can connect with future classmates, AGNR student ambassadors and get questions answered by joining the new AGNR Class of 2017 Facebook page. It’s a great way to get a jump-start on your college experience.”
