FULBRIGHT: The Fulbright Program is sponsored by the U.S. Department of State, Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs. The Council for International Exchange of Scholars (CIES) assists in administering the Fulbright Scholar Program for faculty and professionals. 

The traditional Fulbright Scholar Program sends 800 U.S. faculty and professionals abroad each year. Grantees lecture and conduct research in a wide variety of academic and professional fields.

CATEGORIES AND DEADLINES

AUGUST 1 each year, is the application deadline for all categories of outgoing and incoming scholars. Rosters of opportunities are posted in February each year. It can take 18 months between application and date of assignment.

  • OUTGOING UMD FACULTY OR ADMINISTRATORS:
    Three types of awards: Teaching; Research; and Teaching/Research

  • Distinguished Chair

  • Global Scholar

  • PostDoc and Early Career: Grantees will be expected to engage with graduate students in the host country and to continue their specialized training in cutting edge research. In addition to their primary research or teaching activities, grantees will be asked to give public talks, mentor students, and otherwise engage with the host country academic community.

  • Global Flex – multiple stays over several years. The Flex Award is designed for scholars who require multiple visits to the host country

OTHER THINGS TO KEEP IN MIND...

  • Lifetime limits on yrs/number of Fulbrights was lifted in 2014. There are no longer limits, however preference is given to applicants without previous Fulbright experience

  • Eligibility for (outgoing) UMD faculty or administrators:

    • U.S. citizenship - permanent residence is not sufficient

    • PhD for 2 categories (Global Scholar, Distinguished Chair); for Postdoc, completed phD within 5 yrs

    • Some projects require language proficiency

    • Candidates who have resided abroad for five or more consecutive years in the six-year period preceding the date of application are ineligible

    • Preference given to applicants without previous Fulbright experience

    • Some awards allow family to go along; some countries require invitation letters
