The President of Debre Berhan University (DBU), Ethiopia visited with UMD's Pres. Loh, to discuss possible collaborations between the two universities. The UMD College of Agriculture and Natural Resources and the School of Public Health hosted the DBU delegation. The AGNR Women in Agriculture project has built demonstration vegetable gardens at DBU and is teaching female farmers and extension agents about nutrition. The UMD student group Public Health without Borders has also partnered with DBU where they will address childhood malnutrition.

The delegation includes the vice president of Research and Community Service, the director of the Medicine and Health Science Institute, and the dean of the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources. Ethiopia is under tremendous pressure from climate change, drought and food security. The higher education system has grown dramatically so it can educate its large population and is especially promoting science and engineering study.
