The College of Agriculture and Natural Resources is committed to the career and professional development of all students. Through our integrated and collaborative partnerships, our faculty and staff adequately prepare students for experiential learning opportunities and the world of work. Our College is proud to have a 93% placement rate and our students and alumni go on to have meaningful careers in a variety of industries.

University Career Center at AGNR

The University Career Center at the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources is a partnership between the College and the University Career Center and the President's Promise

Through our multifaceted work we:

  • Coach and advise students through each stage of their career development
  • Collaborate with faculty and staff to build a network of support to ensure student career and professional success
  • Connect employers interested in recruiting and hiring to our talented students.

The main University Career Center is located in Hornbake Library South Wing, 3rd floor, and the University Career Center at AGNR is located in Symons Hall, room 0107 in the Academic Programs suite. 

Obtain Career Advice

Students can meet with career professionals to discuss their career development needs. 

We offer both in-person and virtual appointments year round (including Summer and Winter!). Students and recent alumni may schedule appointments through Handshake

Resume reviews with a Peer Career Educator, occur each weekday afternoon in the University Career Center, 3100 Hornbake Library, South Wing.

Resumes

Our University Career Center Terp Guide provides great examples of resumes cover letters and a wide variety of career topics. UCC at AGNR has also created an AGNR Sample Resume Book. This supplemental guides showcase resumes for the agriculture and natural resources sectors. 

Our newly launched self-paced Resume Basics Module provides tips for crafting an effective resume in regard to both content and formatting. Through text, videos, graphics, and activities, students will learn how to tailor their resume so that they are competitive for positions of interest.

Graduation Outcome Data

Each year, the University Career Center surveys recent graduates to obtain and share first destination outcome data. The College of Agriculture and Natural Resources has a placement rate of 91%. The survey captures career-related outcomes, as well as data on participation in co-curricular activities during graduates’ tenure at the University of Maryland. The full 2022 Graduation Survey report is a helpful resource to see where UMD graduates, and specifically AGNR grads, are working, going to graduate school, and includes salary data.

Lead by Iowa State University, each year, participating agricultural colleges across the nation provide data to summarize entry-level salaries of recent graduates of their programs. The information is useful to help illustrate industry trends and provide appropriate baselines for both students and employers.

Career Exploration

There are a wide variety of tools and resources to help students explore careers within agriculture and natural resources. 

Academic Career Courses

For some students, the most effective way to learn about career development is through  a course. We offer courses that address aspects of career development, internship or job search preparation. Learn more about the courses we offer 

Vault, a resource provided by the University Career Center that contains industry guides, articles, and other resources related to industry topics and trends. AGNR students can find industry guides specific to public parks and lands, environment and conservation, food and beverage, veterinary career and working with animals to name a few. To access Vault, students should log into Handshake, and look for Vault within the "Resources" tab under Career center. Once logged into Vault, click on "Vault Guides" and search for industries of interest. 

AgCareers

AgCareers is a leading job and career development website for the agriculture industry. AgCareers has a variety of resources to help students explore careers in agriculture, such as an e-book with many career profiles, a career guide with weekly articles on many career topics, and other tips for job seekers. Students can sign up for their weekly newsletter to obtain industry information directly in their inbox.  

Networking & Skill Building

Through career panels, career fairs, employer and networking events, we empower students to successfully embark upon their career after UMD. 

Terrapins Connect

Terrapins Connect is an exclusive platform, connecting UMD students and alumni for mentoring relationships.  Search Terrapins Connect to find alumni willing to provide industry advice, interviewing tips, job shadowing and more

LinkedIn

LinkedIn is a leading networking platform that connects professionals world wide for informational interviews or job leads. Students should create a well developed LinkedIn profile and connect with professionals and UMD alumni. The alumni tool within LinkedIn allows students to see where UMD graduates are employed and the skills they utilize in their careers. 

LinkedIn Learning 

UMD students, faculty, and staff have free access to LinkedIn Learning, an online learning service that can help students and professionals develop and build key skills for the world of work. There are many modules on developing job/internship application materials as well as job/internship search strategies. There are also many modules that can help students build technical skills like ArcGIS, Excel, AutoCAD and more!

There are a few resources to assist AGNR students in locating internship and job opportunities.

Handshake is the University of Maryland's career management system. Through this platform, students search for internships and jobs, RSVP for career programs and events, and much more. 

Students can create their own job or internship search alert or view featured AGNR opportunities within Handshake.

**If you feel like you are receiving too many emails from Handshake, go into your settings and make adjustments to what you specifically want to hear about. Do not "unsubscribe" from all emails-- this will also prevent you from receiving event RSVP reminders, appointment reminders, and other important notifications.  

The AGNR Undergraduate Blog, curated and managed by AGNR Academic Programs sends out weekly emails to the AGNR student community. The AGNR Blog posts jobs, internships, professional development conferences, and volunteer opportunities for students to gain professional experience.
