BACKGROUND
Dale was raised on a potato & wheat farm in Idaho. He has been Farm Management Specialist since 1985 for the University of Maryland. He has worked extensively with farms of all types. He has worked or conducted agricultural tours in Poland, Moldova, Ukraine, Hungary, Czech Republic, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, Canada, Estonia, Bosnia & Herzegovina, Holland, Germany, Denmark, New Zealand, Russia, Turkey, Norway, Sweden, Austria, Ireland, Great Britain, Italy, Greece, and Kenya. His wife is a Professor of Education at Shepherd University. They raised their six children on a small farm in western Maryland. They produce much of our own vegetables and fruit in a large garden and have kept broilers, layers, turkeys, goats, rabbits, dogs, cats, cattle, and horses.

EXTENSION FOCUS
Dale conducts workshops and seminars on farm management & business planning, financial analysis & planning, and computer applications for farmers, lenders, educators and others. He consults individual farmers on business planning and financial management. His research focuses on crop and livestock enterprise analysis, farm machinery economics, and futures marketing. He is also active in international Extension work.

UNIVERSITY OF MARYLAD STUDY ABROAD
Dale conducts the Kenya Study Abroad Program for the Univeristy of Maryland. Students learn about agriculture, economics, management, and sustainability. Field trips to Kenya farms provide context for these principles. Students help a community build a dam to sequester water for agriculture and home use. Extracurricular activities include safaris to see African wildlife, hiking mountains, and swimming in the Indian Ocean.
