Multistate Research Program

Multistate Research Program

MULTISTATE RESEARCH

The mission of the multistate research program is to enable research on high-priority topics among the State Agricultural Experiment Stations (SAES) in partnership with the National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA) of the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), other research institutions and agencies, and with the Cooperative Extension Service (CES).  In this way, technological opportunities and complex problem solving activities which are beyond the scope of a single SAES, can be approached in a more efficient and comprehensive way.

Travel

The Associate Dean & Associate Director of the Maryland Agricultural Experiment Station will provide up to $1,500 for faculty to attend annual multistate research meetings or up to $1,000 to attend a multistate research meeting in conjunction with another conference, provided the faculty member is a current principal investigator (PI) and listed as the official representative on a MAES multistate research project in the National Information Management & Support System.

The PI will send a request for MAES Multistate Project travel subsidy, via e-mail to Dr. Puneet Srivastava (srivapu@umd.edu), Associate Dean & Associate Director, and copied to:

  • Rubie Mize (rgmize@umd.edu), MAES Research Coordinator

  • Michelle Prentice (mkpren@umd.edu), MAES Business Manager

  • PI’s Departmental Finance or Business Manager

  • PI’s Department Chair

Multistate Travel Support

Administrative Procedure

ADMINISTRATIVE PROCEDURE – For Multistate Projects

Sub-unit: Maryland Agricultural Experiment Station (MAES)-AGNR

Subject: MAES-– Multistate Research Travel Support

Revised: November 30, 2023

Effective: February 1, 2024

Purpose

The Associate Dean & Associate Director of the Maryland Agricultural Experiment Station will provide up to $1,500 for faculty to attend annual multistate research meetings or up to $1,000 to attend a multistate meeting in conjunction with another conference, provided the faculty member is a current Principal Investigator and listed as the official representative on a MAES multistate research project in the National Information Management & Support System

This travel support applies to only one multistate project’s annual meeting. A faculty can join more than one multistate project, but can only use this travel support for one project per year. The multistate travel support will be shared 50:50 between MAES and UME if the multistate project's official representative is an Extension faculty member with UME who has no research appointment.

Procedure

1. The PI will send a request for MAES Multistate Project travel subsidy, via e-mail to Dr. Puneet Srivastava (srivapu@umd.edu), Associate Dean & Associate Director, and copied to

  • Rubie Mize (rgmize@umd.edu), MAES Research Coordinator,
  • Michelle Prentice (mkpren@umd.edu), MAES Business Manager
  • PI’s Departmental Finance or Business Manager, and
  • PI’s Department Chair.

Request must include the Official Meeting Authorization which has the dates and location of the meeting, and agenda. Request should be submitted at least three weeks prior to the meeting date.

2. The request will be reviewed, and the PI notified, as soon as possible, regarding the status of the travel subsidy request.

3. Once the request is approved, the PI will use his/her own Departmental KFS account number to create a Travel Request in Concur for the meeting. Upon completion of the travel, the PI or the Department's Business Manager will contact the MAES Business Manager to transfer funds (up to $1,500 for multistate meeting travel or up to $1,000 for travel to a conference that includes a multistate meeting) to cover the PI's travel expenses with submittal of appropriate receipts. The PI is allowed to use these funds only for travel requested for a particular multistate project for which he/she is an official representative.
