RESEARCH FOCUS
Dr. Amy Burk is a Professor of Equine Science, Director of the Undergraduate Program and Coordinator of the Equine Studies Program in the Department of Animal and Avian Sciences at the University of Maryland. As the Undergraduate Director overseeing 300 majors, Dr. Burk develops and implements strategies to support student achievement, including excellence in advising, curriculum development, and fostering a robust student experience. Dr. Burk’s extension and applied research programs aim to increase the adoption of best management practices by horse farm operators to reduce non-point source pollution from horse farms. Her novel rotational grazing demonstration site has been used to educate ~ 2,000 individuals and has been replicated by three other universities. Dr. Burk has authored 34 peer-reviewed scientific and extension publications, one book chapter, produced 22 educational videos, and given 115 invited presentations to regional and national audiences. She has secured ~ $1 million in funds to support her extension, applied research, and academic programs. Dr. Burk teaches horse care practicum, horse management, equine science, and equine reproduction as well as serving as the advisor for two student equestrian clubs. Dr. Burk is a governor-appointed member of the Maryland Horse Industry Board, and has previously served as Chairman of the National Association of Equine Affiliated Academics, and board member of the Equine Science Society. Her efforts have been recognized with numerous awards including the Outstanding Educator award from the Equine Science Society, Integrated Research and Extension Award from the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources, and Excellence in Extension from Gamma Sigma Delta. Dr. Amy Burk completed her graduate work in equine nutrition as a Pratt Fellow in the Department of Animal and Poultry Sciences at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University earning an MS in 1998 and a PhD in 2001.
