Community Learning Garden

The Community Learning Garden (CLG) at the University of Maryland (UMD) is a student-run space, managed jointly by a student club and advisors from the Institute of Applied Agriculture and the UMD Arboretum & Botanical Garden. The CLG’s mission is to put into practice lessons about the importance of environmental stewardship, agricultural sustainability, physical activity, and balanced diets. It serves as a living classroom where students, faculty, and staff can engage in experiential education. It is also a central meeting point and community building tool for the University of Maryland and College Park community.

The Community Learning Garden uses sustainable growing practices for all produce, herbs and flowers. All produce is donated to the UMD Campus Pantry. Students can learn about these topics through participating in volunteer opportunities such as helping maintain the garden during weekly open work hours, conducting group or individual projects in the space, attending workshops, taking tours, or engaging through classes that utilize the space.
