Emily Porter is a horticulture consultant at HGIC. She graduated from Environmental Science and Forestry College in New York (SUNY ESF) with a degree in Landscape Architecture in 2008. She is also a Maryland Certified Professional Horticulturist and Chesapeake Bay Landscape Professional with an additional certification in Riparian Buffer installation and maintenance.
Her studies in school focused on historic landscape preservation and time abroad in Kyoto, Japan researching and understanding design details of tea gardens. More recently her landscape design experience in Maryland focuses on home gardens, and she has a background in retail garden center sales, design-build, and private consultation and eco-friendly design. She has a passion for native plants, their ornamental uses, and environmentally friendly gardening techniques (IPM).
Emily’s personal interests include all aspects of gardening as well as growing her own small fruits, vegetables, and herbs, gardening and teaching children about nature, volunteering at her children’s school and for Stream Link Education in Frederick County, Maryland. In her free time she enjoys hiking, canoeing, and camping, trying new foods, and continuing to explore new environments!
