AGNR Student and Faculty Honored

Jessica MoorefieldJessica A. Moorefield is by anyone's standards an exceptional student. The campus has just affirmed that conclusion by naming Jessica one of this year's 25 Philip Merrill Scholars. This program, administered by the Office of Undergraduate Studies, acknowledges the special relationship between student and teacher that lead students toward success and high achievement. The campus' most successful students are asked to identify the person from their K-12 experience and the UM faculty member who have most influenced their lives. The student, teacher, and faculty are honored at a special luncheon, and a scholarship is awarded in the name of the K-12 teacher to a promising new first year undergraduate from that teacher's school or school district who enrolls at UM in the subsequent Fall semester.

Jessica identified Dr. Brian  J. Bequette of our Animal and Avian Sciences Department as her university mentor and her Bowie High School advanced placement psychology teacher, Bob Cantor, as her K-12 mentor. Jessica is a senior in the Department of Animal and Avian Sciences in the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources (AGNR) where she has been named to the university honor roll every semester while maintaining a stellar 3.943 GPA. In addition to academics, Jessica has worked for 3 years in the business office and for the last 1.5 years she has conducted research in Dr. Bequette's labs with egg-embryos, beef steers, and in Spring 2009 she will conduct a study in sheep.

The Philip Merrill luncheon honoring Jessica and her 24 fellow scholars was held November 14, 2008 at the Samuel Riggs IV Alumni Center. Dr. Maynard "Sandy" Mack, Jr., Professor in the Department of English, was the keynote speaker.
