Whether it's tending to a health care bill or a sudden reduction in work hours, unexpected financial crises contribute to high rates of attrition among college students. They also impact college completion rates, ultimately hurting a student's chance of securing a better financial future.
The Dreamkeepers Emergency Financial Assistance program at the University of Maryland is designed to help students avoid dropping out of school when faced with unforeseen financial difficulties.
During the first three years of the program, Dreamkeepers provided more than $1 MILLION IN TOTAL EMERGENCY ASSISTANCE TO NEARLY 2,500 STUDENTS. In the year 2007, the average Dreamkeepers award was $567.
Colleges that have implemented the Dreamkeepers program have seen retention rates skyrocket from an average of 51 percent to 72 percent, helping students over financial hurdles and assuring that they don't have to choose between a financial emergency and staying in school.
Funding for the Dreamkeepers Emergency Assistance Grant is designed to assist students who are experiencing temporary hardships. Please note, the Dreamkeepers Emergency Assistance Grant can not be used to pay for costs related to books or tuition and mandatory fees.
