The Joseph M. Mitchell Memorial Scholarship Award of up to $1,000 is presented each semester to a student (or students) whose personal or family circumstances has challenged his or her opportunity for success at the University and whose ability to succeed can be fostered by the award of scholarship funds.
Joseph M. Mitchell (1963-2005) served University of Maryland students, their family members and his staff colleagues for 17 years. Joe is remembered with joy for his passion for life and kinship, his love of family and friends, his ever-present wit and tireless good cheer, and the depth of his personal commitment to caring for countless others, including strangers and the disadvantaged in our society. Among Joe's special gifts was his ability to identify and mentor students whose life hardships and difficulties sometimes encountered while at the University threatened their ability to stay in school and graduate.
There are four ways to apply for these Scholarship Awards: a student may submit an application for him/herself or a student can be nominated by another person.
Applications and nominations are due by May 1 for the Fall award and by December 1 for the Spring award. Applications from students may be submitted via the online form, e-mail, in person or mail to Mr. Dai-An Tran, Department of Resident Life (1102 Annapolis Hall, University of Maryland, College Park, MD 20742; datran@umd.edu). Applications should address the eligibility criteria below. When a student is submitting an application, nomination by faculty, staff, fellow student, employer, alumnus, or other friend of the University is encouraged but not required. Submission deadlines for nomination forms are the same as above. A student who is nominated is not required to submit a separate application. Up to three finalists may be invited to meet with the Scholarship Award Committee. Questions may be addressed to Mr. Tran at (301) 314-0416.
