Hometown: Trappe, MD
Major: Animal Science

I was attracted to the University of Maryland College of Agriculture and Natural Resources because of the major I was interested in and all the opportunities that were opened up to me through the college’s proximity to such resources as the U.S. Department of Agriculture and the cities of Washington, DC, and Baltimore, to name just a few. Achieving my goal of attending Maryland was made a little easier thanks to the scholarship support I receive.

I was pleasantly surprised by how small and intimate the college is. I can name a number of professors that not only know my face but know my name as well and always stop to talk to me when they see me on campus. At first I was slightly worried about getting lost at such a big school, but being a part of AGNR has really given me a smaller group to be involved with. It’s also provided me with great educational opportunities.

Many of my animal science classes have been enjoyable, especially my anatomy course. I loved, loved, loved my anatomy course! Dr. Black was such a great professor and I loved the lab work. I also enjoyed the Lamb Watch class immensely. It was amazing to see a birth during my first watch and to take care of the lambs from newborn till weaning age. I’ve been doing research with Dr. Brian Bequette since January 2008 and plan to continue with that till I graduate. We’ve been studying nutrition in chicks and steer to identify metabolic pathways that limit nitrogen use or are wasteful.

In addition to my courses and research, I’ve really enjoyed attending university sports events, especially basketball, football, soccer games and playing in the intramural leagues. Go Terps!

Advice for prospective students and their parents: The College of Agriculture and Natural Resources really gives you a home away from home. All of the faculty and staff enjoy getting to know you and they are great at helping you figure out classes, homework, career choices, etc. The college is great and I think anyone who is considering making the University of Maryland their home for the next four years is making an excellent choice.
