Kimberly Lechlider (Miss Maryland Agriculture)

Kimberly Lechlider Hometown: Laytonsville, MD
Major: Agri-Business

I was attracted to the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources because I grew up with a very strong agricultural background. Both sides of my family own farm operations in Montgomery County, and agriculture is something that I wanted to continue to be active in. After looking into colleges, I had the opportunity to meet some of the staff at the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources. They were very helpful and kind, so why wouldn't I choose Maryland? Everyone told me how hard it is to find a large university with faculty and staff that are willing to really work with their students. But here I feel like I can go to anyone and ask a question.

As a high school senior, I interned at a small flower shop, where I decided that I wanted to open a floral shop and work with flowers forever. College is giving me the opportunity to experience different classes and meet so many new people with different aspirations and career goals.  However, at this point, I haven’t changed my mind on the flower shop, although I’m keeping my options open in case I discover something a little more intriguing.

My scholarship has meant the world to me. Not only does it help pay tuition, but it also is a motivator. Earning a scholarship reminds me everyday that I am capable of graduating college and continuing on to follow my dreams.

My favorite course so far has been my math class because my professor is excellent. He explains things thoroughly, so everyone has a good understanding. Typically, math is not my favorite subject, but since my professor makes the material so clear, it’s hard not to like the class.

I’ve really enjoyed the transition from home to the college life. Everyday I meet new people and have developed some strong friendships since arriving here.

Advice for prospective students:  Going to college can be very hard at times, but when you have wonderful professors and advisors it definitely puts you at ease. The College of Agriculture and Natural Resources is a great school with friendly staff who will work with you to make you feel comfortable and help you to have the best college experience possible.

Advice for parents of prospective students:  By allowing your child to come to the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources, you are helping them take a great first step toward independence. Although Maryland is a large university, you shouldn't worry because the college provides a small town feel and there is plenty of guidance available to help keep students headed in the right direction.
