Hometown: New Windsor, Maryland
Major: Agriculture Science and Technology
I was looking for a school where I would be able to gain a broad knowledge in many different aspects of agriculture, which was why the University of Maryland College of Agriculture and Natural Resources was so appealing to me. I also thought that the college was the perfect size; I would be able to take part in smaller classes and get to know and work closer with faculty and staff.
The scholarship support I receive has been a crucial element in helping me attend the University of Maryland. I'm so grateful to be able to attend such a prestigious university.
When I first arrived at college I wanted to be a high school agriculture teacher, which is still definitely a career possibility. But thanks to the broad range of classes I've been able to take so far, I've realized that there are some other options that interest me as well.
Although it would be really difficult to pick one favorite course, I'd have to say that Plant Science courses are the ones that have most intrigued me. I really enjoy the hands-on work I've been able to do in these classes, especially at the greenhouse facilities.
This summer I'm participating in an internship in agriculture sales at Dow Agro Sciences, where I hope to get even more hands-on experience. I'll be working with new herbicide products made by the company and interacting with farmers to sell them these new products.
My involvement with the Animal Husbandry Club and the AGNR Student Ambassadors has really added to my college experience. With both of these organizations I've had the opportunity to be involved in assisting with numerous activities that benefited both prospective students and students already in the college.
I'm really looking forward to being able to experience more opportunities like these while in school, and then I'll make a decision on where I want to go in the future.
Advice for prospective students: Make the most of your college experience. Work hard in classes, but also get involved in student organizations. Take advantage of every opportunity that you can while in college because you never know how they may help you out in the future!
Advice for parents of prospective students: Don't worry too much about your child moving on to college, especially not the University of Maryland College of Agriculture and Natural Resources. Everyone in this college strives to make sure that all of the students are having the best experience possible and that every student will be successful in the future.
