Jessica Hernandez (Maryland State Dairy Princess)

Jessica Hernandez Hometown: Pasadena, MD
Major: Agriculture Science and Technology

I've always wanted to be a terp so attending the University of Maryland is wonderful!

When I came to the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources (AGNR), I knew I wanted to work in public relations and the dairy industry.  Faculty and staff helped me shape my courses in a way that allows me to take a wide variety of classes while still focusing on dairy and public relations. I’ve also gotten a head start in dairy public relations as Maryland State Dairy Princess.  Since July, I’ve attended more than 15 shows and fairs across Maryland, three out-of-state dairy promotions, and AGNR Research Farm Open Houses.

Scholarship support has really helped me through college, I attended community college my first two years because I could not afford the price of a four-year institution.  Now with the help of scholarships, I can decrease my hours at work and focus more on my academic studies.

Agriculture Mechanics is my favorite course because it focuses more on hands-on learning and practical applications and skills, such as welding, arc welding, bill of materials, planning, and drawing.  The class has given me the opportunity to try many different trades that I’d never before experienced.

Outside of class, I'm a member of the campus Animal Husbandry Club and Sigma Alpha, the professional agriculture sorority on campus. One of my best experiences was attending my first Maryland football game—it was more then I ever expected.  Maryland won the game which made it even more exciting.

Advice for prospective students: There is nothing like home-state pride; I love saying that I attend the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources at the University of Maryland!  The college provides so many opportunities in terms of academics, clubs, internships, and scholarships—take advantage of them.

Advice for parents of prospective students: Encourage your child to apply for every possible scholarship and to become involved with on campus activities.
