I was attracted to the Institute of Applied Agriculture in the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources by the equine program offered. The institute feels like a small family that is really concerned about my education and needs. Also, the entire faculty makes me feel at home and welcome in their offices any time I need them. The school doesn’t feel so big and lonely.

When I enrolled, I thought I wanted to manage an equine farm, but thanks to my experiences so far, I’m now also considering other options.

Those experiences include both courses and extra-curricular activities. One of my favorite classes was Equine Behavior taught by Erin Petersen. I really enjoy working with the horses one on one and learning how to handle them and help them to learn different behaviors.

The internship I did during the Summer 2005 semester was a wonderful experience and helped pull together all the ideas that I had been learning in my classes. It also gave me a better idea of what the industry is really like.

My best non-course-related experience has been being part of the Equestrian Club. I am currently president and I feel that just being part of this group has given me opportunities to work with horses and people that have taught me so much.

Advice to prospective students:
“Go for it! The curriculum is very concentrated and specialized; the faculty members are the best in the state; and you’ll feel like you’re home with family!”
