Katy Macleod

Katy Macleod majored in Agriculture Science and Technology in the College of Agriculture & Natural Resources.

“I loved agriculture courses in high school and was interested in all aspects of agriculture and I wanted to find what path I wanted to follow for a career in agriculture.  The major was flexible for me to choose an emphasis in animals, plants, or a little bit of each,” she says.

When she was a junior, she decided she wanted to be a teacher and added a minor in secondary education.  She now works as an agriculture teacher and FFA advisor at Liberty High School in Carroll County, Md.

As a teacher, she has three classes and one planning period each day.  She plans for all her classes, including objectives, notes, class work, and activities. She also works with FFA students and cares for the school greenhouse.

“My advisor and faculty and staff in the college of AGNR were very supportive and helpful in preparing me to enter the work force,” Katy says of her job search process.  She applied to different schools and also went to open county interviews.  She interviewed and got the job at Liberty High School before graduation last year.

Katy is enjoying her career as a teacher, and sees it as a long-term position for her.  She plans on getting her Master’s degree in the near future.

While at the university, Katy was involved in the Animal Husbandry Club, serving as secretary for one year and then president for two years.  She also was a member of the AGNR Student Ambassador group.

“All of my experiences in AGNR helped give me the background knowledge I needed for my job.  I also furthered by responsibility and leadership skills.”
