A new chapter begins for the University of Maryland College of Agriculture and Natural Resources (AGNR) and University of Maryland Extension (UME). Effective August 13, Dr. Daniel Kugler will serve as Acting Associate Dean/Acting Associate Director of UMD Extension. Kugler replaces Dr. Nick Place who will vacate his post later this month to accept the position of Dean for Extension and Director of Florida Cooperative Extension Service at the University of Florida. Dr. Place led University of Maryland Extension for five years.

Dr. Kugler earned a graduate degree in Natural Resource Development as well as a PhD in Agricultural Economics from Michigan State University. He has had a long and distinguished career with the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) serving in numerous capacities. Most recently, he held a part-time position as senior research scholar here at the University of Maryland in the Environmental Finance Center, National Center for Smart Growth.

“I have great confidence that (Dr. Kugler) will provide the leadership needed during this transitional time for UME and will work to continue implementing the organizational changes begun under Dr. Place’s tenure,” said Cheng-i Wei, Dean of the College of AGNR.

Dr. Kugler will serve as Acting Associate Dean and Acting Associate Director for University of Maryland Extension until a national search can be conducted for a permanent placement in the position.
