Drs. Robert Hill and Raymond Miller Named Distinguished Professors by Leading Russian University

Hill and MillerENST Professors Raymond Miller and Robert Hill were named DistinguishedProfessors of Stavropol State Agrarian University (SSAU) in Russia by Rector Vladimir Trukhachev on 22October 2008.          

The Distinguished Professors started working with SSAU in 2004, andtogether with SSAU faculty, they obtained a U.S. Agency forInternational Development (USAID) Higher Education Development grantthat started in 2006. One of only ten grants awarded annually, thisgrant helped the Maryland-SSAU team develop a Distance LearningRegional Consortium with three components, to provide for training offaculty from SSAU and regional partners, to provide Internet-basedcontinuing education programs for practicing veterinarians, and todevelop an agribusiness training certificate course.

Dr. Robert Hill Receives UM's Prestigious Landmark Award

Dr. HillAtthe International Awards Ceremony on November 5th, 2008 Provost NarimanFarvardin present the Landmark Award to the AGNR team working onthe Regional Distance Learning Center project in Stavropol, Russia.

The Landmark Award is given for exceptional long-term achievements insupport of international life at UM. Dr. ROBERT HILL has developedand implemented a multi faceted program that incorporates distanceeducation technology and subject matter expertise. The groupestablished a distance learning center (RDLC) in Southern Russia thathas garnered national recognition for innovation, and throughvideo-teleconference, brought world-known veterinary experts to aprovince far from Moscow.

Dr. David Ross Named ASABE Fellow

RossDr. David Ross has been selected as a Fellow of the American Society of Agricltreal and Biological Engineering (ASABE). Only two-tenths of one percent of members engineers are selected for this honor each year based on career accomplishments in engineering, icluding extensive service, leadership, and productivity.  
For more than 35 years, Ross has provided leadership and extension andeducational programs that have contributed to increased productivity,reduced energy consumption, conserved natural resources, and increasedmarket value of crops to improve profitability of growers and industryas a whole. In addition to his extension appointment, Dr. Ross has beenan active researcher, classroom educator and guest lecturer. “It is agreat honor to be selected for Fellow recognition by my peers,for educational and professional service over many years,” says Dr.Ross.

ENST Faculty, Students Earn Three Prizes at UM's Gemstone Citation Ceremony

GemstoneWhen the Department ofEnvironmental Science and Technology (ENST) faculty partnered with UMGemstone students to complete a thesis on antibiotic resistance inMaryland’s wetlands, they did it for research purposes.
Now, thatpartnership has earned them three awards and recognition at the recentGemstone Citation Ceremony, which took place on Wednesday, May 21, 2008. Dubbed“Team CRABS” - which stands for Characterizing Resistance toAntibiotics of Bacterial Samples – the group of faculty and studentsearned the Outstanding Gemstone Team Thesis award recognized thequality of their overall research. Additionally, Team CRABS members wonindividual awards – Robert Vocke III, aerospace engineering major, andNeil Agarwal, biochemistry/mathematics major, won the Outstanding TeamScholar award, and Dr. David Tilley, Associate Professor in ENST, wonthe Outstanding Gemstone Mentor award for his work with Team CRABS.

ENST wins 1st Place in the American Ecological Engineering Society's 3rdAnnual Student Design Competition

Ecology Team members were Jennifer Brundage,Jeff Price, Yin-Phan Tsang and Laura Schumman. Dr. David Tilley wasthere advisor. The event was hosted by Va. Tech University inBlacksburg, June 10-13, 2008. This year's competition had the studentsdevelop a working model of stream restoration plan that included aplan, profile, and longitudinal morphology that:
