AREC Welcomes David Newburn to Faculty

Dr. David Newburn joins the faculty as an Assistant Professor with the Department of Agricultural and Resource Economics.

Dr. Newburn's primary research interests focus on the economics of land use and water resources, relying heavily on the application of geographic information systems (GIS) and spatial econometrics. Recent research projects include: housing development and land-use regulations in the urban-rural fringe; optimal allocation of conservation funds for protecting open space and habitat; agricultural water management and instream flows; and environmental trading programs in water quality.

The University of Maryland's well-established research programs and centers studying topics such as the challenges of protecting the Chesapeake Bay watershed were part of the reason Dr. Newburn chose to come to Maryland. He will be co-teaching AREC 200, The Chesapeake Bay Ecosystem: Intersection of Science, Economics, and Policy. He is currently collaborating with AREC Assistant Professor Dr. Charles Towe and UMD AREC alumna Dr. Elena Irwin (Professor, Ohio State University) on a project studying residential development and the impact on water systems, which is funded by the National Science Foundation.

Prior to his appointment to the Maryland faculty, he was assistant professor at Texas A&M University. Dr. Newburn received his Ph.D. in Environmental Science, Policy, and Management in 2002, followed by a two year position as a Ciriacy-Wantrup Postdoctoral Fellow in Natural Resource Economics at the University of California, Berkeley. He is returning to his alma matter, having received his Bachelor of Science degree with high honors in Physics from the University of Maryland, College Park.
