Tropical River Ecology and Sustainable Development in Belize

Research on tropical ecology and resource management has been conducted on a river in central Belize for nearly 20 years. An important focus for the work has been a travel-study course in which University of Maryland students visit Belize either over spring break or during the summer months. This is a research course so, in addition to lectures and field trips, students contribute to the overall research goals and they conduct their own independent projects. The original goals of the study were to develop a baseline description of the river ecosystem and to make conservation recommendations based on the ecological field work. Overtime, however, the focus of the research has changed from emphasizing descriptive ecology towards greater involvement in the human side of conservation. Student Exchange Program in Ecology and Natural Resources Management in Brazil

The Department of Environmental Science and Technology and the Office of International Programs provide leadership to a student exchange program between the states of Maryland, USA, and Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Every other year, a small group of Brazilian students and one or two faculty members come to Maryland to learn about its educational and academic facilities, environmental NGOs, related government agencies, and research foundations; in the intervening years, a like number of students and faculty from the University of Maryland travel to the state of Rio de Janeiro.

The exchange program is the result of an agreement among the University of Maryland,the Federal Rural University of Rio de Janeiro, and Fluminense Federal University (located in Niterói, Rio de Janeiro) that has evolved to include other universities in the state of Rio de Janeiro. Learn more>>

African Ecology

This is a course to introduce the ecology, wildlife, and ecosystems of northwestern South Africa. You will travel to Kimberley, then on to the Kalahari Desert where you will have an opportunity to see many different mammal and bird species up close.  In addition, students will visit captive breeding facilities for endangered species, game preserves and ecotourism areas, and cap it off with a trip to the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park, one of the crown jewels of the South African National Parks system. This year, the class will be approximately 10 from University of Maryland and ten from Clemson University. The two groups will meet in Johannesburg, South Africa then travel together. Learn more>>
