The College of Agriculture and Natural Resources Alumni Chapter honors faculty and staff members who make outstanding contributions through Extension, Research and Teaching, and also recognizes students graduating from both the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources and from the Institute of Applied Agriculture on the basis of outstanding leadership, service, and scholarship. An outstanding graduate student is also recognized. And, the Chapter celebrates its members through the Alumnus Meritorious Service Award, which recognizes outstanding contributions to agriculture and natural resources, and the Alumnus Early Career Award, acknowledging very recent contributions of those who graduated from AGNR within the past 10 years. Finally, the Chapter applauds the dedication of those who are not alumni of the College yet have provided enthusiastic support of AGNR programs. These individuals join the Chapter's Circle of Friends or receive Honorary Membership.
The awards will be presented at the Annual Reunion and Awards Celebration on Tuesday, April 15, 2008, at the Samuel Riggs IV Alumni Center on the College Park campus.
These awards express the appreciation of the Alumni to faculty, staff, students, and fellow alumni for their outstanding contributions in extending the Agriculture and Natural Resources Programs of the University of Maryland. A list of past recipients is attached.

General Award Nomination Guidelines:
Excellence in Instruction Award:
Candidates must be dedicated and demanding teachers, clearly demonstrating effectiveness in working with students. Example criteria might be increasing student enthusiasm and involvement in learning, successful graduate student training, innovation in course and program development, evidence of student contribution to science or society, successful efforts in encouraging student enrollment, etc.All faculty and staff with an academic appointment by the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources are eligible for this award. The same person may receive this award more than once during his/her career in the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources.
Candidates should be actively involved in a distinguished research program in basic or applied sciences which has gained significant recognition. It must be clear that the awardee has made a valuable contribution to science.All faculty and staff with an appointment with the Agriculture Experiment Station (AES), either in the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources, or in departments outside of the college (such as Entomology) are eligible for this award. Candidates may be located in academic units on campus, or at off-campus components of the research and education centers. The same person may receive this award more than once during his/her career in the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources.
Excellence in Extension Award:
Candidates should have established a distinguished Extension program which has significant recognition and which can be shown to have benefited the citizens of the state.All faculty and staff with an appointment in Cooperative Extension, either in the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources, or in departments/colleges outside of AGNR (e.g., Life Sciences or Health and Human Performance) are eligible for this award. are eligible for this award. Candidates ma be located in academic units on campus, at off-campus components of the research and education centers, or in a county, The same person may receive this award more than once during his/her career in the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources.
Outstanding Senior Student Award - 4 year program:
This recognition is given to a graduating student who has: Provided outstanding service to the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources; Demonstrated dedicated leadership to College of Agriculture and Natural Resources student organizations; Exhibited high standards of citizenship and fellowship; Maintained an above average academic record; Conducted themselves in a manner which reflects positively on their fellow students, the College of Agriculture and Natural resources and the University of Maryland System.Outstanding Senior Student Award - 2 year program:Each academic program is asked to make a nomination supported by a record of the student’s activities and achievements.
This recognition is given to a graduating student who has: Provided outstanding service to the Institute of Applied Agriculture; Demonstrated dedicated leadership to Institute and/or AGNR student organizations; Exhibited high standards of citizenship and fellowship; Maintained an above average academic record; Conducted themselves in a manner which reflects positively on their fellow students, the Institute of Applied Agriculture, the College of Agriculture and Natural resources and the University of Maryland System.Outstanding Graduate Student AwardEach academic program is asked to make a nomination supported by a record of the student’s activities and achievements.
This recognition is given to a graduate student who has: Demonstrated excellence in conducting research in pursuit of an advanced degree; Exhibited excellence in teaching as related to discipline area and research; Demonstrated leadership and/or service to the department, college and/or university; Maintained high standards of scholarship, citizenship, fellowship; and Conducted themselves in a manner which reflects positively on their fellow students, the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources and the University of Maryland SystemEach academic program is asked to make a nomination supported by record of the student's activities and achievements.
Outstanding Alumnus Early Career Award
Recognition will be given to an alumnus making significant contributions to their field of endeavor. The candidate will have developed imaginative methods and programs, displayed leadership and development of leadership in others, and will have established harmonious professional relationships. Primary evaluation of accomplishments should highlight contributions of recent years (5 years or less).
- Any graduate of the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources having graduated within the past 10 years IS eligible for this award.
- Any current AGNR faculty/staff who are also AGNR alumni ARE NOT eligible for this award while employed by AGNR.
All departments, programs and administrative units are encouraged to nominate an outstanding alumnus for this prestigious recognition. Nominations from non-university sources are also welcome.
Outstanding Alumnus Meritorious Service Award
Recognition will be given to an alumnus making significant contributions to their field of endeavor. The candidate will have developed imaginative methods and programs, displayed leadership and development of leadership in others, and will have established harmonious professional relationships. Primary evaluation of accomplishments should highlight contributions of recent years (5 years or less).
- Any graduate of the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources having graduated 10 years or more ago IS eligible for this award.
- Any current AGNR faculty/staff who are also AGNR alumni ARE NOTeligible for this award while employed by AGNR.
All departments, programs and administrative units are encouraged to nominate an outstanding alumnus for this prestigious recognition. Nominations from non-university sources are also welcome.
Alumni Chapter Circle of Friends
Recognition will be given to individuals who are not alumni of the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources and may or may not be alumni of the University of Maryland. Nominees shall have rendered outstanding service to a particular program within the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources.
Not more than three (3) individuals will be recognized in any one year.All departments, programs and administrative units are encouraged to nominate an outstanding alumnus for this prestigious recognition. Nominations from non-university sources are also welcome.
Alumni Chapter Honorary Membership
This award recognizes individuals who are not alumni of the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources and may or may not be alumni of the University of Maryland. Nominees shall have rendered outstanding service to the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources.
This award requires the vote of the Board of Directors at least one (1) month prior to bestowing the award.All departments, programs and administrative units are encouraged to nominate an outstanding alumnus for this prestigious recognition. Nominations from non-university sources are also welcome.
