A native of Walkersville, MD, Helen will graduate in May with a double major in Agricultural Resource Economics and Operations Management with a 4.0 straight A-grade point average. In her coursework she has demonstrated a keen ability to grasp theoretical concepts and complex mathematical models of economic behavior, and see how these models can give insight into the functioning of real world markets.
Helen is a practical student and during a class on auctions, she gave an improptu presentation on her experiences at Maryland livestock auctions. She was able to apply her experiences as an intern in the Sustainable Agriculture and Research Education program at the Beltsville Agricultural Research Center on the potential for using sawgrass as a raw material in ethanol production while serving as a teaching assistant.
She also completed an additional internship with the marketing department of Mid-Atlantic Farm Credit. Her projects included a marketing and promotion program for the Mid-Atlantic Nursery Trade Show, a regional event with over 12,000 attendees. She served as a teaching assistant for AREC 306 - Farm Management, lecturing and holding office hours. She also worked as an office assistant in the college's academic programs office. Outside the classroom Helen has been active in many facets of the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources.
Helen served as chairman of the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources Student Ambassadors and as a treasurer of the Animal Husbandry Club. She is a member of Alpha Zeta Honorary Fraternity, Gamma Sigma Delta Honorary Society, Phi Kappa Phi, and the Golden Key International Honor Society.
This recognition is given to a graduating student who has: Provided outstanding service to the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources; Demonstrated dedicated leadership to College of Agriculture and Natural Resources student organizations; Exhibited high standards of citizenship and fellowship; Maintained an above average academic record; Conducted themselves in a manner which reflects positively on their fellow students, the College of Agriculture and Natural resources and the University of Maryland System. Each academic program is asked to make a nomination supported by a record of the student's activities and achievements.
