Theme: “90s Agriculture, More Than a Mouthful”

Ag Day Dedication: Dr. Edgar P. Young

On February 17, 1928 in Van Wert County, Ohio, a special man began his life; a life dedicated to agriculture. He began working at an early age on the family-owned, general livestock and grain farm. In high school, he was active in Future Farmers of America and received the American Farmer Degree. Although he enjoyed the farming life, his love for knowledge and hopes to better agriculture were greater. He, therefore, went on to Ohio State University, where he earned his B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. degrees in Animal Science.

It was in 1958 that Dr. Edgar P. Young brought his expertise to the University of Maryland. Since then, he has given an incredible 30 years to the animal Science Department, to its students and to agriculture.

Dr. Young was the Chairman of the University of Maryland Animal Science Department from 1968-1982 and presently serves as a professor and extension specialist in swine. He has taught 14 different courses during his stay at Maryland and in 1963 was awarded the University-wide Excellence in Teaching Award. He has done an extensive amount of applied research emphasizing swine, and has served as advisor to 6 Ph.D. and 19 M.S. students.

He is a recipient of numerous awards, such as the Maryland Pork Producers Association Award and just recently, the coveted Roy Porter Award, for the contributions of a non-producer to the pork industry. He is one of three campus professors to be elected to a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, and received the Distinguished Service for the North Eastern American Society of Animal Science Award.

His list of awards and accomplishments are endless, but to students, Dr. Young is best known for his eagerness to teach and his true care and concern for students. The Animal Science Department wouldn’t be the same without his warm, humble smile and his unhurried industriousness. His accomplishments and abilities in extension and teaching have earned him respect beyond his words. It is to Dr. Edgar Young that we dedicated this year’s 65 th Annual Agriculture Day booklet.
