Giving to the College of AGNR
Our mission
When Charles Benedict Calvert established the Maryland Agricultural College in 1856, his goal was for the institution to lead the way for excellence in agricultural teaching, research and outreach—a goal that the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources and the University of Maryland still value and pursue.
The mission of our college—the university’s first—has always been to use scientific advances to improve life for citizens in Maryland. Today, though, our scientists and students are just as likely to research bio-energy or nutraceuticals as they are horticulture, and their work has local and global implications.
Much of our strength lies in the breadth and depth of our programs. We offer 11 majors, with 31 areas of specialization ranging from pre-veterinary medicine to landscape management. Close to some of the world’s most important agricultural, environmental and health organizations, we can provide students with exciting experiential opportunities in areas such as food and water safety, pollution and environmental protection and animal sciences.
Dynamic collaborations between outstanding teachers and world-class researchers create breakthroughs and new solutions to critical problems around the world, whether on the farm, in a rainforest or at the grocery store.

Why you should give
Your gift will allow the college to hire and retain the best possible faculty, attract the brightest students, provide them with a top education regardless of need, and conduct research in facilities that encourage innovation.
Our work will create and protect a safe, abundant food supply throughout the world. We are poised to become an international leader in food system security and safety, and we also expect to lead the way in agro-security by tracking food from field to fork.
While looking ahead, we will not forget our roots. Traditional fields like nutrition and food handling and preparation take on added importance when threats of bio-terrorism and crop failures loom.
Research performed at the college will also continue to conserve and enhance the environment we live in, leading in areas such as water quality and supply, landscape management and aquaculture.
The college will expand its work in human and animal pathogens, vaccine research and animal health and development. We also plan to introduce more inventive farming techniques in Maryland and around the world. The state’s unique balance of urban development and agriculture make it a prime location to nurture programs in value-added farming; agricultural profitability; land use; and field, nursery and greenhouse management.
With all of these commitments to the world around us, the college is still devoted to strengthening local communities. We will sustain the growth of our successful 4-H youth development program, while becoming an important resource for rural and urban populations through finance, family nutrition and economic development programs.

New Forestry Research Released
The Harry R. Hughes Center for Agro-Ecology, Inc. recently released a report entitled, “Estimating Timber and Non-market Values of Maryland’s State-Owned Forestland,” that could assist Maryland’s forest managers as they seek to maximize the benefit from management decisions on state-owned properties. - posted May 14, 2008
