Sin Kei Yeung is a senior who is working toward a double degree in Nutritional Sciences and Biological Sciences. While maintaining a grade point average of 3.7 she has worked as an undergraduate research assistant in the lab of Dr. Thomas Castonguay in the Nutrition and Food Science department. She has completed an Honors thesis researching the effects of intracerebroventricular injections of Nuropeptide Y on the catecholamine overflow of the rat ventromedial hypothalamus in vivo. Her work has been funded by three competitive grants. She is an author on three abstracts involving her work and that of others in the Castonguay lab, which have been presented at professional meetings. She has also traveled to Brazil to perform field research on biodiversity and has done an internship investigating the effects in inbreeding on the monkey flower.
Ms. Yeung has held leadership roles in several campus organizations. She is the Service Vice President of the Alpha Phi Omega national Coed Service Fraternity, and the Presiding Officers of the Student Honor Council. She has also served as the Deputy Service Vice President and Recording Secretary for Alpha Phi Omega. In addition, she works as a waitress and desk receptionist at the Stamp Student Union. She has found time to volunteer at Howard County General Hospital, at CARing - Children at Risk through the Lutheran Student Union, and with numerous activities with Alpha Phi Omega.
Her honors include being a recipient of the Robert A. Facchina Scholarship, and a member of Gamma Sigma Delta, the honor society of Agriculture.
Ms. Yeung is currently in the process of applying for a Postbacclaureate Intramural Research Training Award Fellowship with the National Institutes of Health. She also has plans to apply to medical school. She hopes that more research experience outside of the university setting will help her decide if she will pursue research when she attends medical school.
