Outstanding Senior 4 Year - Rebeccah A. Waterworth


A native of Seabrook, Maryland, and a 1999 graduate of Eleanor Roosevelt High School, Rebeccah Waterworth will graduate in May with a Bachelor of Science in Environmental Science and Policy while maintaining a 4.0 grade point average. She will also receive a citation from the College Park Scholars program in Environmental Studies. Rebeccah received the Citizenship Award from the Environmental Sciences College Park Scholars Program in 2001.

Rebeccah has been an active member of the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources community during her 4 years at Maryland. She has served as a Student Ambassador since 2001, has been President and Secretary of Alpha Zeta, Honorary Agriculture Fraternity and is a member of Gamma Sigma Delta Honorary Fraternity. She has been the recipient of the Goddard Memorial Scholarship and Ernest Cory Scholarship.

While excelling academically and serving the college, Rebeccah has integrated internships and part-time jobs into her college career. She completed an internship at the Plant Germplasm Inspection Station at USDA, Beltsville where she assisted in plant grafting, and weeds and seed identification while learning to use an electron microscope and establish protocols for detecting viruses in plant materials. She has also worked as a lab technician in the Floral and Nursery Plants Research Unit, again at USDA in Beltsville. She was responsible for germinating and propagating plant materials in greenhouse space and tissue culture, and maintaining these cultures and preparing them for HPLC analysis. Most recently Rebeccah has been employed as a lab assistant in the Department of Entomology working with Dr. Paula Shrewsbury on an Integrated pest Management (IPM) research project in addition to field work, plot and greenhouse maintenance, and assisting with IPM short course classes. She has been published in Hortiscience and presented a paper on her IPM research at the Eastern Branch meeting of the Entomological Society of America in Harrisburg, PA.

Following graduation, Rebeccah plans to pursue a graduate degree in Entomology at the University of Maryland.
