Harry Steven Evans is currently employed as the 2nd Assistant Golf Course Superintendent at Hampshire Greens Golf Course in Silver Spring, Maryland, having joined this profession in 1995. Prior to that change in career paths, Steve worked in a variety of businesses from sales construction to stained glass restoration after having earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Sociology from West Virginia University in 1973.
Steve had always been an avid golfer, and became interested in golf course management after working in golf course maintenance. As he explored his career change, Steve realized that education was the key to his future success in the golf course management field. He began the IAA golf course management program and saw it as a way to use his 20 years of experience in the construction industry to get him where he wanted to be: managing a golf course.
Like many Institute of Applied Agriculture students, Steve takes courses part-time while continuing to work full-time. His fervor for applying the coursework to his work situation has earned him a spot on the honor roll and multiple scholarship awards. He has been the recipient of the Mid-Atlantic Association of Golf Course Superintendents Scholarship and the Shields Memorial Scholarship.
Steve has also been instrumental in getting the student Turf Club strengthened on campus. He has worked to involve both two and four year students in the organization. He has promoted interaction with other area university turf clubs as well. He will represent the Institute of Applied Agriculture at the U.S. Golf Course Superintendent's Association meeting in Dallas, Texas, this spring.
Steve's variety of experiences combined with his dedication to the profession and his scholarship, truly make him an Outstanding Graduating Student.
