A highly recruited student from Tabernacle, New Jersey, Christina Toms hit the ground running as a Biological Resources Engineering major and continues to achieve and contribute as graduation nears in May 2002.
Christina was awarded a Banneker/Key Scholarship, the premier, "full-ride" scholarship offered from the University of Maryland as an incoming freshman and is enrolled in the Honors Program.
Christina has been a very visible student within the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources (AGNR) as well as the campus community. She has served as an AGNR Student Ambassador since 1998 and is currently serving as chair of that group. She has also served on several college committees including the review of the associated dean, a search committee for associated dean and the web advisory committee. She was elected to the campus senate as the AGNR student representative and has served as chair of the University Senate Student Affairs Committee.
Beyond these rather serious activities, Christina also found time to have fun and participate in the UM Equestrian Club, the UM Women's Ultimate Frisbee Team, and the Catholic Student Center. She has been an active member of the Biological Resources Engineering Department pre-professional club - preparing talks, and helping with hot dog sales and AGNR Day events. She also took time to attend the Engineering Student Council meeting to represent Biological Resources Engineering interests.
During her summers, she's returned to her native New Jersey to work at Golder Associates, Inc., in their Geotechnical Laboratory performing soil analysis and classification in both laboratory and field conditions. In 2000 she worked for the Environmental Branch of the Naval Engineering Station at Lakehurst, New Jersey. She was responsible for preparation of engineering reports and drawings using AutoCAD and ArcView GIS, water sample collection, solar powered pump maintenance, and various resource management activities.
Christina's diverse interests, academic success, and contributions to the college and campus, truly make her an Outstanding Graduating Senior.
