A Native American from Harford County, Aiman Duckworth graduated in December 2001 with a Bachelor in Landscape Architecture. Aiman graduated summa cum laude with a cumulative grade point average of 3.94.
Faculty note that Aiman is not only an exceptional writer, but one of the "most sensitive and adventurous designers in the program." "He was always fascinated with the potential of a site and his explorations led him to some of the most intriguing resolutions in the studio."
Aiman was also involved outside the classroom and design studio. He served as Vice-President of the Maryland Student Chapter of the American Society of Landscape Architects and served for two years on the Student Executive Board. He was instrumental in organizing a trip to Montreal for the Labash Conference, a student-directed meeting of landscape architecture students from around the world. He also served as president of the Native American Student Union and was selected as graduation speaker for the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources in December 2001.
He completed an internship with the landscape architecture firm, Biohabitats, Inc., of Timonium, Maryland. This firm served as the University of Maryland Facilities Master Plan consultant for the Ecological Master Plan. During the summer of 2001, Aiman participated in the Sustainable Futures Program in the cloud forests of Monteverde, Costa Rica. During the 10-week Capstone experience, Aiman expanded the initial project presented by resident faculty and proposed a network of trails through the ecologically sensitive and biologically fascinating region. Inspired by the connectivity of the Appalachian Trail, Aiman has proposed a footpath connecting various landscapes and settlements over great distances.
In addition to these long-term experiences, Aiman has also served as a canvasser for MaryPIRG, Maryland Public Interest Research Group, Baltimore; as an intern for education and visitor services as well as a free-lance insect illustrator at the U.S. Arboretum in Washington, DC; and a teaching assistant in the Landscape Architecture program.
This multitalented, sensitive, articulate recent graduate is clearly outstanding and is already as asset to his alma mater.
