The College of Agriculture and Natural Resources: A Land-Grant College
As anyone familiar with the University of Maryland has discovered, there is a mysterious title attached to the institution. Tagged onto the many other titles the University carries, “land-grant college” often gets lost or misinterpreted. Land-grant status is much more than a cryptic title.
Just as many state universities aim to educate “regular people” rather than the societal elite, land-grant colleges were meant to educate the common people, which, in Abraham Lincoln’s day, meant farmers, shopkeepers and artisans. The College of Agriculture at the University of Maryland began in 1856 when Lord Calvert donated land for a college.
President Lincoln established land-grant colleges in 1863 to promote day-to-day knowledge especially involving agriculture. Lincoln’s sweeping legislation was followed by the Hatch Act in 1887 that stressed the ned for research and established agricultural experiment stations. The Smith-Lever Act in 1914 called for agricultural extension activities. In combination, these acts shaped the three-part mission of land-grant colleges: teach, research, and serve.
Be proud to be in The College of Agriculture and Natural Resources. After all, not many students here can say that they belong to the first college at the University of Maryland!
