UMD AG DAY 1994

Cover Art: Jim Searing
Theme: Learning Today to Care for Tomorrow
Ag Day Dedication: Tom Moreland
It is with great pleasure that the Agricultural Student Council dedicates this book to Tom Moreland, Research Manager of the Central Maryland Research and Education Center (CMREC), Clarksville.
Tom has been with CMREC for over 15 years. He received his Bachelor of Sciences degree in Technology of Management from the University College in December 1989. He is currently working on his Master of Sciences at University College and expects to finish this December.
Tom and his wife Fran are raising two daughters Melissa, age 13, and Amanda, age 10. He is an active member of the community and coaches both basketball and soccer for his daughter’s teams. With all this going on, Tom still finds time to teach the students from the University of Maryland herd health and artificial insemination.
Tom started the Herd Health program with Dr. Barbara Penny soon after the dairy herd was removed form the UMCP campus. The program gives students the opportunity to acquire some large animal experience as well as giving them an introduction to herd health management. The certificate from CMREC that each student receives upon successful completion of the program is valued by neighboring veterinary colleges. He has continued on with the program thanks to the support of the CMREC and local veterinarians
Tom also offers the students an Artificial Insemination Certification course every chance he can. There have been times that he has rearranged his schedule and made promises just to acquire the cull cows necessary for the course. He also extends an open invitation to any student, with the proper prerequisites, the opportunity to do a special studies course at CMREC under the sponsorship of Dr. Lee Majeskie. He offers students the chance to learn about the automated milking system, daily herd management and the culture of agriculture.
Tom gives so much of his time and of himself in order to help the students get the best education possible. He is a patient and honest teacher who has influenced many students during their years at UMCP. He has given them an understanding and excitement about the agricultural field that cannot be experienced in the classroom.
In thanking Tom for all he does for the undergraduate education of the Animal Sciences students we would also like to thank those who support him in what he does; his family, his colleagues and the people at CMREC. The benefit of what Tom and they have done will be evident in the years to come as the students proceed into the industry and the veterinary field.
Thank you Tom. You have made a wonderful difference in our lives and we will always be grateful!
