Ag Day 1989

UMD AG DAY 1989

64th Annual Ag Day

Cover Art: Kathy Price

Theme: “Agriculture, Your Daily Bread”

Dedication: Dr. William English Kirwan

In 1964, the University of Maryland acquired an assistant math professor. After twenty five years of serving in a variety of positions, this math professor is now President of the University of Maryland, College Park. Since joining the faculty here, Dr. William English Kirwan has served as a professor of mathematics, an acting vice chancellor, the vice chancellor for academic affairs, and the chief academic officer of the campus. In addition to his service to the University, Dr. Kirwan has also been the program director for the National Science Foundation (1975-1976) and editor of Proceedings of American Mathematical Society (1977-1985). He is known as a published math researcher and co-editor of the book, Advances in Complex Analysis.

His devotion to his field and to the University of Maryland is rewarded by the admiration and support he receives from students and colleagues. Dr. Kirwan has been described as being a calm, soft-spoken administrator and tireless worker. Other colleagues have mentioned his ability to look beyond the day-to-day problems to see what lies ahead. He is hailed by John B. Slaughter for his strong human characteristics of high integrity and honesty.

Dr. Kirwan recently spoke at the College of Agriculture Alumni Fellowship Dinner. The Agriculture Student Council dedicates the 1989 Agriculture Day booklet to Dr. William Kirwan in appreciation for his service to the university and its students.
