Ag Day 1987

UMD AG DAY 1987

62nd Annual Ag Day

Dedication

The year was 1939. The Department of Animal and Diary Husbandry proudly dedicated new, modern dairy barn facilities on the College Park campus. The diary herd moved from behind Turner Laboratory and we continue to use it today to work, learn, research and practice. But the history of cows on campus goes back much farther than these barn areas where we celebrate Ag Day today. The College Park Dairy Herd, in one form or another, has been an educational resource since the University’s founding as the Maryland Agricultural college in the 1850’s when the first catalog noted that “science in its application to agriculture is in its infancy.”

Dr. C. Walter England, a 1923 Maryland graduate and later Professor of Dairy Manufacturing, writes that, in those very early years, dairy information was only included in veterinary and cattle breeding courses. The first course offering specifically in dairy production was in 1875. In those days, the cattle were primarily used for teaching purposes and it was not until 1895 that arrangements were made so that the Maryland Agricultural Experiment Station could use the College herd for research. The student fitting and showing contests that are the ancestors of today’s festivities may date back a hundred years or more, though the oldest known photographs and Diamondback coverage show cattle being exhibited in front of Rossborough Inn in May 1924.

Student involvement with the herd has gone beyond course requirements to include employment and other “activities”. Some Ag Day visitors may remember, or participated, when the old Holstein cow, Alva, was sent up the elevator in Centreville dormitory or when two varsity wrestlers, out walking on a spring evening, were drafted by the herd supervisor to help in the delivery of a calf. Few will forget the day fistulated cow coughed rumen content over the graduate assistant’s white lab coat. Student workers live in what is now the herd office building until the early sixties. Hundreds of students have gained experience, though perhaps not wealth, as barn employees.

Into the late sixties, the College Park dairy herd consisted of Holsteins, Guernseys, Ayrshires, and Jerseys. The University ahs been recognized for high production and type in all theses breeds. However, as the national trend shifted more toward the black and white cattle, the color breeds were gradually reduced. The last Guernsey was sold in 1981 and the herd became known as College Park Holsteins.

The heritage of dairying and agriculture is strong on the College Park campus. It may be seen in the buildings name for Professors Taliaferro, Shipley, and H.J. Patterson. It is represented by the current dairy her and facilities, soon to be removed to make way for a newer, more modern addition to the Animal Sciences Center. And, with development of the Teaching Laboratory Complex, this heritage continues, but also comes full circle, reflecting the words of the 1859 catalog: “The scheme of the Agricultural college… embraces an experimental and model farm, with a plan for the advancement of Agricultural Science, based upon practice.”

And so, in this transitional period, the Agricultural Student Council dedicated the 1987 Ag Day booklet to the College Park Dairy Herd, in its many forms, for over one hundred years of contribution to the lives of Maryland students, faculty, and staff.

The Agricultural Student Council would like to thank Dr. Donald A. Hegwood for his support of the Council in the past years. Dr. Hegwood was the Dean of the College of Agriculture from 1982-1986. During this time he has helped the Council by being our administrative advisor. He was always available to give advice, lessen the council’s workload and promote the council’s activities. Dr. Hegwood also coordinated and participated in the college of Agriculture leadership retreats. This allowed students the opportunity to polish leadership skills so that their clubs would benefit. Thank you again Dr. Hegwood for your support.

Agriculture Student Council

The Agriculture Student council is a service group consisting of representatives from all agricultural clubs at the University of Maryland. Its purposes are to coordinate activities of the member clubs, to promote agricultural public relations, and to establish and develop interaction among students, faculty, administrators and alumni. In addition, the Ag Student council promotes the welfare and betterment of physical conditions and academic programs on campus for agricultural students.

There are 12 campus agricultural clubs represented on the Ag Student Council. Two representatives are elected to serve from each student club and officers of the Council are elected to 1-year terms from among these representatives. This year’s Ag Student Council members are:
